Mackinac City, Mackinac Island and Surrounds

Condé Nast named Mackinac Island one of the 10 best islands in the world. It offers a special blend of beauty, history, tranquility and cosmopolitan charm. Truth is it can cost a pretty penny. Many travelers we know have their sights set on one day staying in the luxurious walls of the Grand Hotel. That is one of 3 options we’re offering for our Mackinac trip designed to accommodate various budgets and travel tastes.

All include travel by motor coach from Detroit to Mackinac City and back, accommodations, breakfast daily, ferry rides to and from Mackinac Island, admission to the island’s Butterfly House, Fort Mackinac, island carriage ride tour, trolley tour of Mackinac City and travel insurance.

We spend Thursday afternoon exploring Mackinac City shopping and dining. We learn about the city, port and area’s history on an included trolley tour. Those staying on the island will board the ferry to check in to their hotels.

Friday all travelers will enjoy the tours and offerings on Mackinac Island.
Saturday, Travelers in the city will board the motor coach and cross the Mackinac Bridge to St. Igance. Travelers on the island will board the ferry for St. Ignace to join the group. Our time includes an optional excursion to Soo Locks, the largest waterway traffic system on earth and one of Michigan’s top and best-rated attractions.

Source Booksellers has completed its inaugural Book Lover’s Tour and is already hard at work with the Jet Set Travel Department planning a book tour for Spring 2012!

The Book Lover’s Tour of London was organized around the London Book Fair and designed to compliment the “unique niche” of Source Booksellers’s book offerings: culture, history and spirituality.

The travelers were kind enough to collect notes on their experiences and allow us to share them here.

Traveler Notes:

SUNDAY 4/10
We arrived at Heathrow Airport in London, where we were met by Globus Travel: Janet Jones and Alyson Nancy Jones, trip leaders, Ken Turner, Clifton Shaw, Gloria Aneb House, and Ami Ayo Jackson.

Our group was taken to the Ramada Jarvis in Hyde Park. There was a little hitch in our hotel accommodations, but we worked that out fairly quickly. We freshened up, and took a cab to meet Nikki and Drew Godfrey, friends of Janet and Alyson, who live in Brixton, London. We spent the afternoon with them at the St. James Church Café Nero in Piccadilly Street. Then we walked to Marble Arch and Edgeware Road to find a Lebanese restaurant recommended by Drew. We were walking forever; we even neglected the fact that we were passing the famous Speaker’s Corner in Hyde Park, where anybody may come on Sundays to express their opinions and concerns in an open public forum. There are only three rules at this forum: you may not insult the Queen, you may not disparage any religion, and you may not incite a riot!

We walked what seemed an interminable distance, trying to find our hotel. When we finally reached the hotel, we collapsed in the lounge, which would become our living room, for our nightly debriefing, refreshments and relaxation.

MONDAY 4/11
Fantastic breakfast in the hotel dining room. A full spread — including the traditional English sausage, beans, tomatoes and mushrooms.

We left our hotel for a full morning tour of the city with Globus Tours. Our guide, Bev, was charming and knowledgeable. The following are some of the sites we visited and had pointed out to us:

St. Paul’s Cathedral (Christopher Wren, architect; origin of expression “Robbing Peter to pay Paul”)
Buckingham Palace
Big Ben and Houses of Parliament
Mayfair and other important districts of the City
London Eye of 2000
Memorial to 9/11
London Bridge
Tower Bridge
Trafalgar Square, including the following statues:
Mandela
Lincoln
Churchill
George Washington
Lord Nelson

After this extensive, thorough tour, we took a cab to shop and have lunch at Fortnum and Mason, the second most luxurious department store in London – after Harrod’s. Then off to the Buckingham Palace Gift Shop, where Alyson and Janet wanted to buy candles in the Queen’s favorite fragrance, hyacinth.

In late afternoon, we were back in our “living room,” where we collapsed again, intending to go out later to eat at the Indian restaurant, Rasa Samura, but we were too tired to move. Aneb had come back to the hotel earlier and we expected she would join us in the “living room.” We phoned her room, but got no answer. Clifton happened to look out the window just as Aneb was getting into a cab, thinking we were already at the restaurant, and intending to meet us there. Alyson raced out to catch her just before the taxi pulled off. We interpreted this quick save as a sign that we were in fact becoming a unit! That was it for Monday.

TUESDAY 4/12
We rose, donned our spiffy black and gold Source Booksellers t-shirts, had breakfast, and took a cab to Earl’s Court for the London Book Fair. Took photos in front of the signs outside the building, put on our ID cards and ventured in. Checked our coats, got lost in the sea of folks — all wearing black just like us.

Meandered for several hours among a zillion books from all over the world, very chic displays, enticing complementary refreshments and eager sellers. Amy attended a lecture on children’s literature. Aneb made notes on the trip. Clifton, Janet, Alyson and Ken spent time with Richard Webster. Janet made notes on books by Webster that she intends to order from Llewellyn.

The guys headed off to do their thang!

We visited Rachel, Janet’s bookseller friend, at work at the Great Jones Books booth. We helped Janet make some choices about the books she would buy for the store. As we were about to leave, Rachel very generously gave Aneb two books that she had been perusing.

The idea occurred to Aneb that Janet might create an attractive and witty new card for the store featuring a pen and ink drawing of herself with her round glasses. Janet liked the idea.

Amy and Aneb turned in early. The other folks hiked all the way over to Piccadilly again to hang out at a vegetarian restaurant!

WEDNESDAY 4/13
Yippee! Shopping day; but first to Greenwich for a stop at the Royal Observatory and the Prime Meridian of the World, where Alyson wanted to straddle the line dividing the eastern and western hemispheres. The Royal Observatory Museum was definitely interesting, with its tracing of the numerous discoveries and inventions that form the basis of our knowledge of time, astral rhythms, and ocean navigation.

From there we took a ferry from Greenwich down the Thames to the Westminster district. Now we were off to shop! We took the tube to Harrod’s! The splendor of the place overwhelmed us as we entered this world famous department store. We decided we’d better agree on a rendezvous spot since the place was so large. We chose the oyster bar, where there was an impressive monument to world of Neptune.

Aneb and Amy had the most exquisite ever lunch in the elegant restaurant and wine bar in the store’s basement. All of us enjoyed finding souvenirs for friends and family. We bought several of the little Harrod’s bags that are popular among folks who have visited or simply know about Harrod’s.

The newly refurbished complex of Covent Garden and the Royal Opera House was our next stop. Clifton, our own opera star, simply had to have a souvenir from this important cultural mecca. We spent an hour or so in the Royal Opera House gift shop, then, so exhilarated by this visit, Clifton performed a riff from some opera or the other right there in the plaza!

Janet was tempted to attend the performance of “Aida” scheduled at the Royal Opera House that evening. The ticket price of one hundred and fifty pounds dissuaded her.

We stopped in the plaza, — where there was a teeming crowd of people, even on this week night — to hear a Chinese gentleman play the sheng, an instrument that produces a lovely, hauntingly peaceful sound, constructed of a series of pipes attached to a mouthpiece. Over 3,000 years old, the sheng is said to be the forerunner of the pipe organ and the accordion. Janet purchased a CD from this gentleman to take to her yoga sessions.

Our one remaining objective of the day was to find Foyle’s Bookstore. We got there happily — after receiving confusing directions from bus drivers and finally discovering that street repairs obscured the location of Charring Square, the street we were trying to find.

Inspired by the Foyle’s sales program that allows purchasers to accumulate points towards future purchases, Janet is considering initiating a similar practice at Source Booksellers. In addition, she may improvise on the design of the nice Foyle’s pen she bought to create a Source Booksellers’ pen.

Alyson and Ken were our navigators throughout this busy day, as they were throughout our trip, guiding us through the streets as well as through connections in the tube.

Clifton generously paid the cab fare home.

THURSDAY 4/14
We had breakfast and checked out of the Ramada Jarvis. Our new driver, Andrew, picked us up at 8:45 and we headed for Oxford and Blackwell’s Bookstore.

In Oxford, Janet, Alyson and Ken went to the Science Museum to see Einstein’s blackboard, while Amy, Clifton and Aneb took the hop on/hop off bus tour of the city.

We all returned to Blackwell’s Bookstore at 2:00 to hear the history of that institution from its development in the early 1800’s. The present-day store extends for a full city block.

At 3:00, we had a fantastic, leisurely lunch at the restaurant owned by Jamie Oliver of Food TV Network.

At 6:00 we attended Evensong at Christ Cathedral of Christ College, Oxford University. We were deeply moved as we took Communion and listened to the splendid singing of the choir in this magnificent edifice.

Andrew was waiting outside the Cathedral to drive us the three-hour trip to Glastonbury. We arrived at the nearly 600-year-old bed and breakfast inn, George and Pilgrims, around 10:30.

Tired. Lots of bags to get up to our rooms on the second floor (that is, third floor to us Americans). No lift (elevator)! No place to leave the bags securely at the Reception. Narrow, winding staircase. Heave-ho! Ken was the superman.

FRIDAY 4/15
Picked up at 5:30 a.m. by a wonderful guide, John Flannagan, to explore Stonehenge. We couldn’t have had a better guide! John is highly spiritual, deeply knowledgeable in metaphysical matters, as well British political and cultural history. Aneb called him an Anglo Saxon griot. He generously and easily shared his life path with us.

We had breakfast in Marlborough, at the quaint and lovely Polly’s Tea Room. A beautiful spread of British pastries and Easter treats greeted us as we stepped inside.

We were then off to visit three additional sacred sites in Avebury: the man-made mounds; the burial chambers of the ancients, and the stone circle monument that extends over 28 acres. John preceded us into the burial chambers to light candles and to give us a moment to meditate on “letting go” of any aspects of our lives that no longer serve us well.

Ninety percent of the crop circles that appear in the world are observed in the rather limited area where we were, between Stonehenge and Avebury.

Still at the Avebury monument site, we climbed up a hill to observe four trees where marriages are often conducted. When these four trees are in bloom, they appear to be only one tree. The roots are completely intertwined. Powerful natural symbolism for those about to be united in marriage.

All of the sacred sites are under the protection of the British government.

On our return to Glastonbury, John pointed one of the mythic white horses of the area. These mysterious sculptures have been carved in the ground of chalk. There is no definitive explanation of their meaning or their origins.

Back in Glastonbury, we went to the Speaking Tree Bookshop to visit Janet’s friend, Gareth. Then we milled around the store, helping Janet choose books for Source.

We ended our day at a Fish and Chips restaurant, and returned to the hotel to prepare for our last day.

SATURDAY 4/16
John returned to pick us up at 8:30 a.m., and we were off to Wells, the smallest town in England. We did a tour of the Wells Cathedral, an elegant Gothic structure that was completed over several centuries, beginning in 909 A.D. The Wells Cathedral houses the oldest clock in all of Europe, with a merry-go-round of horsemen set in motion by a mechanical gentleman time-keeper, who strikes the bell and begins the music on the half hour.

From Wells in Somerset County, we traveled to Bath to visit the ancient Roman Baths and Museum. We had delightful lunches at two of the finest restaurants (one for the vegetarians, one for the rest of us) in this bustling town. We capped off our visit to England by spending the afternoon in what is called The New Bath, a luxurious, unisex thermal spa that opened only four years ago.

Completely relaxed and happy, we dozed all the way back to London and the London Hilton Hotel at Heathrow Airport. We said goodbye to our excellent guide, John, by presenting him the gift of a Source Booksellers journal in which each of us had inscribed our appreciation. We sang, “For he’s a jolly good fellow” to him before we climbed out of the van. He surprised us by turning to us and saying, “One more thing before you go! Remember, God is real!”

We ate lightly in the hotel restaurant, printed our boarding passes, and said goodnight to each other. Next day we would rise at 5:30 to get to the Terminal and board our flight home to Detroit.
